This is a striking, well carved stringed instrument from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Harps and other stringed instruments are among the most important art forms in Africa. They are used both as a musical instrument and as a work of sculpture. They are significant in many religious and secular ceremonial functions, including dance, rituals and story-telling. This example, like many, incorporates the human form as the body of the instrument.
This instrument has 4 strings, pulled between the resonator and the neck.
