A well carved door lock from the Dogon people of Mali. Openings into granaries were sealed by carved doors or panels. Figures of humans, animals or of symbolic motifs were carved in relief onto the surface of the door. Each door had pointed corners that served as hinges and a sculpted wooden lock to keep it closed.
Dogon doorlocks (ta koguru) were composed of two parts: one was a fixed vertical element known as ta koro, fixed to the door with iron staples. The second part of the doorlock is a horizontal wooden piece called ta dagu that slides through the vertical piece locking the door.

This is a long and heavy day-bed made in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is nicely carved and would look stunning used as a centrepiece in a room as a coffe table or low seating for those extra guests.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, chiefs were kept off the ground as symbol of their holiness. They were carried around aloft, if nothing was on hand they sat on somebody's back. They did not sleep or recline on the ground but on ceremonial beds or backrests.
