These very ornate and exquisitely carved horns are from the Bamileke people of the Cameroon. They are carved from one piece of wood and can vary greatly in size depending on their usage. Smaller ones such as these were used as prestige drinking horns and were a man's most important personal item. Others would be used ceremonially for their sound. Very large horns were displayed as an entrance arch through which the king of the village would appear.

These horns would look lovely mounted on it's own custom made stand. Each horn is decorated with motifs that represent Bamileke ancestors.

This nicely carved spoon comes from the Dan people of Cote D'Ivoire. It is a fine example of its kind. The Dan carved spoons with figurative handles for domestic and ceremonial use. Spoons were reserved for special meals, for sharing sacred foods and for use at banquets on festive occasions.

The spoon is however, purely more than functional and is linked to wealth and prestige. The handle of the spoons would either be carved as a beautiful female head or pair of legs extending the elongated bowl. The Dan spoon is a ceremonial item and is awarded to women who are judged to be the finest cook and manager of feasts, renowned for her generous hospitality and supported by the other members of a female society. Such a woman is known as a Wadeke or Wunkirle. For important events such as funerals the chief then calls upon the woman to display her hospitality where a feast is required.

Zulu beer pot

Mainland UK £15.00

Rest of World by arrangement

This is a magnificent Zulu beer pot.

Zulu beer pots are an integral part of Zulu culture. The beer pots are used for the storage of their brews, as ritual beer drinking is an important customary aspect of Zulu life. Beer drinking takes place at marriage and funeral ceremonies and also to introduce a new child to the ancestors at puberty ceremonies. The process of making the pots involve coiling strips of clay, which, is then incised or embossed with geometric patterns and then fired. This then hardens the clay and turns it black. The making of the pots involve hours of hard labour and skill by the Zulu women.

Zulu beer pots are well sought after by collectors and will look amazing as part of your interior decor. The pots are stunning in their simplicity, restraint and elegance. When not in use the opening is covered by a basketry lid to keep out flies.
