Textiles
Textiles in Africa are an explosion of vibrant colours and intricate designs. Textiles were intended to been seen, adorned and give pleasure. Africans used textiles in a variety of different ways, for ceremonial purposes or for decorating their homes.
Kuba cloth is a beautiful fabric and comes in a variety of fabulous designs. It is hand-made from the raphia viniferia palm, by the Kuba people from the Democratic Republic of Congo. It involves a laborious process which involves weaving, embroidery, applique, patchwork and dye. Kuba cloth can take between a month to 2 years to complete. Some were originally used as currency, whilst others were used as clothing (skirts) for ceremonial occasions and court rituals. Kuba cloth is a true collector's item and will make absolutely stunning decor in a home or business.
Bogolanfini (mudcloth) originates from the Bamana people in Mali in West Africa. Cotton fibers are woven into strips, then soaked in a solution made from local trees. Organic substances are mixed with riverbed mud and and allowed to age for up to a year until they reach the correct formulation. The textile is then decorated by the artist and finally soaked in a solution to bring out the patterns. All patterns and colors on mudcloth have different meaning.
Mudcloth can be used for a multitude of purposes including bedcovers, wall hangings, throws, cushions, table mats and upholstery. Let your imagination run wild!
