Another beautiful Luba piece.

Among the characteristics of Luba sculpture are: intricate hair-dress, often in the form of a cross, a grooved diagonal band separating the hair-line from the forehead; eyes shaped like coffee-beans. The traditional carvings are for initiation, medical and divination purposes. Some figures are freestanding, almost always in a frontal position, often with their hands on their breasts; others are kneeling, sitting, or standing figures whose upraised hands serve as supports for bowls, seats, and neck rests. The female figures are modeled in rounded forms and have what is called dodu - a stylistic tendency toward plumpness.

This is an interesting example of Luba sculpture.

This represents a prince called Tshibinda Ilunga who was the son of a Luba Emperor. He devoted his time to hunting, which was his favourite activity. One day he was hunting in a territory ruled by a Chokwe princess called Lweji. She was struck by his good manners and good looks and married him. Her brothers were angered by this and left to set up kingdoms elsewhere. Although he never ruled over the Chokwe, he was considered a model prince.

In one hand he is holding a stick, in the other he is holding a medicine horn.

Lega Totem

This carving comes from the Lega people who live in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Carved out of wood it is used during ceremonies and rituals within the structure of the Bwami society, a voluntary association for both men and women. The society is composed of different levels or grades and their function is to safeguard the moral, social and political code necessary for the lega people to live in harmony together and with their neighbours.

These figures are usually owned by high-level Bwami members. Each piece of lega art has a specific meaning and function and is used only by the initiated. These lega statues are referred to as sakimatwematwe (Many-Heads). The story goes that an elephant hunter crosses a river and sees an elephant on the other bank, he goes back to get help from the other hunters but when he returns sees that the elephant has already been killed by the others. In other words, the story shows the importance of being able to see in all directions and to be wise and fair-minded.

Measurements: 40cm H x 15cm wide.
