Background/History
Burkina Faso is a landlocked nation in West Africa and its name means 'the land of the upright and honest men'. It was formerly called the Republic of Upper Volta due to three rivers which cross it - le Mouhoun (formerly called the Black Volta), le Nakambe (the White Volta) and le Nazinon (the Red Volta). It is bordered by Mali, Niger, Benin, Togo, Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire.

Spotlight On: Mali
Background / history
Modern day Mali is the largest country in West Africa and was part and parcel of a succession of ancient empires, including the Ghana Empire, the Mali Empire and the Songhai Empire.
The Mali Empire was founded by Sundiata Keita - the "Lion King" - who overcame disability as a child to become a powerful emperor. He ruled from 1230 to 1255. Mali was one of the world's chief suppliers of gold. They were also major traders in ivory, livestock, salt, leather, silver, rare birds and honey.
